SES Space & Defense to provide always-on LEO Relay Services (LRS) to Starlab via O3b mPOWER, supporting real-time mission awareness

Reston, Va., July 27, 2026 – SES Space & Defense, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SES, and Starlab have agreed to collaborate on communication architecture to deliver continuous, resilient, low-latency connectivity services supporting the full lifecycle of Starlab’s commercial space station via its LEO Relay Services (LRS).

Starlab, which is developing the commercial space station under NASA’s Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development (CLD) Program, selected SES Space & Defense due to its integrated multi-orbit space and ground architecture.

At the core of LRS is SES’s next-generation MEO constellation, O3b mPOWER. Traditionally, LEO satellites communicating to large ground stations experience data delays due to intermittent coverage. O3b mPOWER, eliminates data delays through a multi-orbit LRS infrastructure by relaying LEO data through MEO to ground networks in near real-time. This enables always-on connectivity for Starlab operators, researchers, and on-orbit crew, ensuring uninterrupted access to data, telemetry, and mission operations that support critical decision-making and mission awareness.

“Human spaceflight and commercial research missions demand government-grade communications with reliability, security, and resilience at commercially affordable price points,” said SES Space & Defense President and CEO David Broadbent. “By integrating our LEO Relay Services into Starlab’s core operations, we’re setting a new benchmark for always-on communications across commercial LEO infrastructure.”

The communication system is the result of a comprehensive engineering collaboration between SES Space & Defense and Starlab. Throughout 2025 and 2026, the teams modeled in-orbit performance, assessed terminal solutions and aligned the relay architecture with Starlab’s mission profile and design requirements.

“Mission success in Low Earth Orbit depends on resilient, always‑available communications infrastructure,” said Brad Henderson, Chief Commercial Officer of Starlab. “Through our collaboration with SES Space & Defense, we are building a robust, secure, and highly resilient communications architecture that ensures continuous connectivity and real‑time mission awareness across all phases of station operations.”

The integrated architecture will provide Starlab customers with a seamless path to scale as additional relay capabilities and next-generation terminals come online. SES Space & Defense’s communication services will be available at Starlab’s launch and expand throughout the station’s operational lifecycle.

New agreement makes it easier for all U.S. military branches to buy high-speed, reliable Ku-band satellite services anywhere in the world

Reston, Va., July 07, 2026 – SES’s wholly-owned subsidiary, SES Space & Defense, won a five-year Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) with the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command to provide reliable and secure managed satellite services. This deal enables the Department of War (DoW) to quickly order global Ku-band connectivity, helping people stay connected and protected, even in the world’s most remote locations.

The BPA creates a new, simple way for the military to quickly get strong satellite links in remote mission locations. Every connection under the new agreement uses Ku-band satellites. These satellites cover a large area and are known for high speed and reliable performance. Features include:

• FlexMove: a satellite service that keeps people connected while moving or stopped, even in remote places without cell towers or coverage.
• FlexGovSecure: a security-focused service, using TRANSEC technology, which hides signals to protect against tracking and hacking. With this agreement, the DoW can get a fully managed, TRANSEC-protected Ku-band service, improving safety for critical missions.
• FlexAir: a service for aircraft, built with help from Satcom Direct Government (SDG), a Gogo company. SDG delivers FlexAir services through its own Gogo Plane Simple Ku-band terminal.

“Managed services like Flex provide access to advanced SATCOM capabilities without the cost and complexity of maintaining proprietary infrastructure,” said David Broadbent, President and CEO, SES Space & Defense. “The managed service allows our customers to focus on mission objectives while leveraging industry speed, innovation, and efficiency to stay ahead of evolving threats.”

The agreement reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize satellite communications procurement to flexible, commercially driven procurement models.

“We’re proud to partner with SES Space & Defense to deliver FlexAir,” said Hayden Olson, Head of SDG. “Our Plane Simple Ku-band antennas and extensive understanding of military expectations and requirements position us to support SES in delivering seamless, resilient, high-speed global connectivity to support mission-driven solutions.”

Luxembourg, March 24, 2026 – SES, a space solutions company, today announced it will deploy meoSphere, a next-generation medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite network targeted for operation by 2030 and designed to significantly boost the company’s MEO network capacity.

The program launches with a close collaboration designed for efficient satellite production. SES will pair its own software-defined payloads, being developed and manufactured in Luxembourg, with an initial 28 high-power satellite platforms developed by K2 Space, representing the first phase of the broader meoSphere rollout. The collaboration gives SES tighter control over key supply-chain elements, compresses the build timeline, and allows the company to manage schedules and costs with precision, laying the foundation for future scalability.

meoSphere is SES’s next generation MEO network, significantly boosting global broadband capacity, increasing user data speeds while reducing terminal sizes and costs. These step-change improvements come from advances in payload and terminal technologies, software-defined networking, 5G non-terrestrial network (5G NTN) standards and MEO’s inherent strengths: efficient geographic coverage, ability to steer capacity to the high-demand areas, optimizing ground-station deployment, and low latency. The network is designed to meet growing demand for secure, stable, reliable, and resilient connectivity across government, mobility, and fixed telecommunications markets. The meoSphere network will be compatible with Europe’s IRIS2 program.

Orbiting at about 8,000 kilometers above Earth, SES is designing meoSphere for adaptability across new missions, new use cases, and new customer segments. Beyond its core broadband mission, the network’s flexible architecture will support multiple missions simultaneously, including integration with sovereign networks, serving governments and other customers that require sovereign solutions. meoSphere will also support the growing space economy, functioning as a space-based host for customer payloads and as a “backbone network in space” that enables interconnections between constellations in all orbits to relay data to each other and to the ground in real time.

“Space is the invisible backbone of the global data economy and national security,” said Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES. “Together with K2 Space and other space partners, we’re building meoSphere as essential infrastructure—constructed faster, designed to handle massive data demands globally, and built to support the secure, resilient sovereign networks that our global government allies depend on.”

“The meoSphere partnership with SES is a clear validation of K2’s mission to build the highest power satellites on orbit to realize our partners’ and customers’ ambitions in space,” said Karan Kunjur, Co-Founder and CEO of K2 Space. “We’re incredibly proud to partner in this effort with SES, a longstanding and forward-leaning space industry leader who shares our commitment to building new, efficient space architectures at speed and scale.”

Over the next three years, SES plans to launch a series of MEO “pathfinder” missions with K2 Space to test and validate the satellite bus and SES payload components in orbit, refine operational concepts, and reduce risk ahead of full-scale deployment. Each mission will carry progressively greater payload complexity, incorporating lessons learned from earlier flights into the development cycle.

This announcement builds on SES’s collaboration with K2 to develop a next generation MEO network. This initiative is included in the company’s previously-announced capital expenditure guidance for full-year 2026 and is expected to conform to SES’s financial policy of disciplined capital deployment. The company is committed to using a disciplined mix of commercial and public-private approaches to mitigate financial risk. In addition, SES intends to maintain a dual supply chain across the Atlantic to strengthen resilience against potential constraints in parts availability, permitting, and logistics.

Designed for continuity, built for confidence
meoSphere is engineered for customers whose operations cannot afford uncertainty — where connectivity failures have real-world consequences and performance must be guaranteed.

For government and defense customers, that means command-and-control communications that are resilient in contested environments. MEO’s orbital geometry offers inherent resilience: a smaller number of widely-spaced satellites presents a fundamentally different threat profile than dense low-orbit constellations, while the network’s transparent payload architecture allows sovereign customers to operate their own waveforms and modems including in the “military Ka-Band” spectrum range, preserving the security and independence that classified and sensitive missions require. Space-based routings via optical intersatellite links (OISLs) ensure traffic always lands in secure gateways.

For mobility customers in aviation and maritime, meoSphere will deliver fiber-equivalent throughput to support passenger connectivity, crew communications, and operational systems, simultaneously across ocean routes where coverage gaps are not an option. For commercial aviation, its combination of high throughput and low latency is built to perform at scale. meoSphere’s flexible design will enable SES to offer mobility clients multi-orbit solutions in combination with LEO and GEO.

For telecommunications operators and enterprises, meoSphere will offer a high-performance connectivity layer based on a 5G-NTN network suited to customers seeking path diversity and extended network reach.

How meoSphere is built: architecture and the K2 Space platform

meoSphere is a multi-mission space network built for government and commercial customers that require a high degree of security, control, reliability and resilience.

The architecture is optimized to take advantage of inherent strengths of the payload and bus: the high-power K2 Space satellite bus, which handles power, propulsion, flight control, and other foundational platform systems; and the digital regenerative SES payload, which carries the mission equipment—radios, processors, and antennas—to connect users and networks on the ground. By developing payloads and related software in-house, SES can apply repeatable design and test methods to accelerate batch production and maintain direct oversight of the performance characteristics that matter most to customers.

meoSphere architecture will allow SES to scale the network over time beyond the first 28 satellites. Scaling of the network will be determined by market demand.

Luxembourg, January 13, 2026 – Satellite communications solutions provider SES will provide secure uninterrupted satellite communications to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for a minimum of six years thanks to a new extended agreement. The service will be provided via the SES Intelsat 22 satellite and an ultra-high frequency (UHF) military communications payload.

Under the renewed arrangement, SES will reposition the IS-22 satellite to a new orbital slot specified by the ADF, continuing a mission that has been the cornerstone of Australia’s secure military communications since IS-22’s launch in 2012. SES will build a dedicated ground segment, including a purpose-built antenna facility on Australian soil, solidifying the infrastructure needed for seamless operations now and into the future.

“This agreement ensures critical communications capability for the ADF and its strategic partners across the Indo-Pacific,” said Philippe Glaesener, SVP of SES Global Government. “At a time when secure, sovereign communications are more vital than ever, it provides operational certainty and supports Australia’s long-term resilience and leadership in defense. We are proud to serve as both a technological partner and strategic enabler for the ADF.”

The IS-22 satellite’s UHF payload has been virtually irreplaceable for the Australian Defence Force, supporting both national missions and joint operations with key allies, most notably the United States. With no other comparable UHF capacity immediately available in the Indo-Pacific, the continuation of service via IS-22 positions Australia to maintain a critical communications advantage, while supporting multinational defense collaboration.

The current industry context has seen a sharp increase in demand for secure military satellite communications worldwide, particularly in UHF, where supply is extremely limited. By securing access to the IS-22’s capabilities for years to come, the ADF will maintain not only continuity but a strategic edge in command and control, secure mobility, and coalition interoperability.

Luxembourg, 17 September 2025 –SES announced today that the French Navy’s aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle leveraged its secure and reliable O3b mPOWER satcom service – Managed Naval mPOWERED – during the Clemenceau 25 mission. This high-throughput, low-latency Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) connectivity solution supported all of the aircraft carrier’s operations, while facilitating collaboration with mission partners.

During the five-month deployment, the French Carrier Strike Group (GAN) covered 40,000 nautical miles and conducted various exercises and joint activities with around twenty allied nations. The connectivity provided by SES ensured optimal performance and uninterrupted operational availability for the aircraft carrier’s mission-critical applications. Thanks to the global reach, reliability and exceptional high-speed capacity of the Managed Naval mPOWERED solution, which can deliver several hundred Mb/s of guaranteed throughput, the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier enjoyed continuous connectivity throughout the mission. This performance was supported by SES’s O3b mPOWER gateways in Europe, the Middle-East and Asia-Pacific along the entire route from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.

Philippe Glaesener, Senior Vice President of Global Government at SES, said: “Aircraft carriers such as the Charles de Gaulle are essentially floating military bases. They require secure, resilient low-latency satellite connectivity service at all times to support the diverse and complex data needs of the personnel onboard – from surveillance and intelligence, navigation and access to cloud applications, to daily communications. We are proud that our managed connectivity service demonstrated the critical importance of satellite connectivity for our government customer throughout the five-month Clemenceau 25 international mission.”

The O3b mPOWER system is built on an initial constellation of 13 high-throughput satellites orbiting 8,000km above Earth, supported by global ground-based infrastructure. Delivering comprehensive services with unmatched performance, the system enables the most mission-critical operations through high throughput, predictable low latency and exceptional availability — all backed by robust service-level agreements (SLAs). With terabit-scale capacity, O3b mPOWER can dynamically deliver congestion-free managed services, ranging from tens of Mb/s up to several Gb/s per service.

Coupled with the terrestrial-based network linking the entire system, the service ensures cohesive connectivity across teleports and the Global Network Centers (GNC). This collaboration strengthens the U.S. Army’s communications infrastructure, ensuring reliable and secure global coverage to meet the demanding needs of military operations.

“This award is a significant milestone for SES Space & Defense and reconfirms our commitment to delivering interoperable and secure satellite services to the U.S. Army – as a leading satellite services integrator for the DoD, and provider of the previous STN iteration known as Wideband Enterprise Satellite Systems (WESS) COMSATCOM Network (WCN),” said David Broadbent, President and CEO, SES Space & Defense. “We are proud to continue providing advanced global end-to-end COMSATCOM capabilities giving the U.S. Army a decisive information advantage.”

Luxembourg, 24 July 2025 – SES and the Luxembourg Government today announced their plan for development of a second satellite for GovSat (LuxGovSat S.A.), the public-private partnership and 50/50 joint venture between SES and the Luxembourg Government that provides secure, reliable and accessible satellite communication services for governments.

GovSat-2 will be positioned over the European satellite arc. It will join GovSat-1 in augmenting reliable connectivity services for government customers over the region. The satellite will be built by Thales Alenia Space on its Spacebus 4000B2 platform.

Since launching in 2018, the joint venture’s first defence satellite, GovSat-1, operated by GovSat from a secure missions operations centre in Luxembourg, has supported the Luxembourg Directorate of Defence, EU and NATO nations, the U.S. Department of Defense, and other governmental users. It has been providing connectivity for theatres of operation, interconnection of institutional as well as defence sites, border control, Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance, and various other types of communications for air, land and maritime missions.

The state-of-the-art GovSat-2 satellite will extend the coverage and scale of GovSat, and is designed to address the needs of defence users at the highest Security and Service Assurance Level. The satellite will add new ultra-high frequency (UHF) channels, X- and military Ka-band, and will include other security features such as dedicated hardening, an advanced anti-jamming system, and embedded geolocation.

The investment in GovSat-2 is in line with SES’s stated financial policy criteria, and also in line with prior combined company CAPEX guidance. The satellite will be co-funded by SES and the Luxembourg Government, subject to approval of the corresponding draft law by Parliament.

“The procurement of GovSat-2 underscores the success of the GovSat public-private partnership to provide Luxembourg, our allies and partners with secure military satellite communications that supplement their national systems and support a wide range of critical military, defence and civilian security applications,” said Yuriko Backes, Minister of Defence of Luxembourg. “With GovSat-2, Luxembourg will once again demonstrate its significant impact in the field of Space”.

“With geopolitical shifts and an increased need for scalable national security and defence capabilities, we are seeing growing demand for secure, reliable geostationary (GEO) connectivity with comprehensive coverage across Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the Mediterranean and the Baltic Seas,” said Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES. “As governments across Europe look to bolster their sovereign satellite communications for defence and intelligence needs, GovSat-2 gives GovSat additional MILSATCOM capacity to address this strategic area of growth.”

“GovSat-2 reflects the growing demand in military satcom, allowing our GovSat public-private venture to scale and broaden the services we have been providing since 2018. For this brand new satellite, we are adding more frequency bands along with innovative functionalities for it to be well-positioned to address the future connectivity challenges the NATO and partner nations face,” said Patrick Biewer, CEO of GovSat.

Reston, Va., 22 July 2025 – SES Space & Defense is pleased to announce the appointment of David Broadbent as President and CEO, effective July 17, 2025, as designated by the SES Space & Defense Proxy Board. His appointment coincides with the completion of SES’s acquisition of Intelsat, marking a significant step in the integration of the two organizations.

As part of the acquisition, SES has combined the government and defense divisions of both companies under one integrated organization, SES Space & Defense.

“I’m honored to lead this newly integrated organization at such a pivotal moment,” said David Broadbent, President and CEO, SES Space & Defense. “Our focus moving forward is to harness the combined strengths of our people, capabilities, and technology to deliver mission-driven outcomes for our government mission partners. As a unified team, we are uniquely positioned to provide a secure and resilient multi-orbit strategy that advance national security objectives, protect sovereignty, and ensure uninterrupted access to critical communication infrastructure.”

David Broadbent has over 20 years of leadership experience in the satellite communications and defense sector. He joins SES Space & Defense from Intelsat, where he most recently served as President of Government Solutions, responsible for the company’s global government business. Prior to his time at Intelsat, David spent 21 years at Raytheon Technologies in a variety of senior business leadership roles, including serving as President of the company’s Space Systems business unit.

“David Broadbent brings the strategic vision and operational discipline essential to advance our government business,” said Billy Bingham, Chairman of the Board of Directors, SES Space & Defense. “With a career defined by success across both U.S. and international government markets, he has consistently translated mission needs into innovative, effective solutions. David’s deep expertise in SATCOM, defense technology, and government solutions positions him to accelerate SES’s mission of delivering secure, resilient, and forward-leaning space capabilities.”

Broadbent succeeds David Fields, who has led SES Space & Defense with distinction for the past three years.

“David Fields has been an integral part of our organization since SES acquired DRS Global Enterprise Solutions in 2022,” said Billy Bingham. Under Fields’ leadership, SES Space & Defense was formed, setting a new benchmark for excellence in delivering secure, mission-critical comms. Through his vision, integrity and commitment, Fields built a trusted brand and a mission-driven culture that continues to serve our customers. On behalf of the Board and the entire organization, we extend our sincere gratitude to David for his lasting contributions to our team, our partners, and the mission.”
